The Western Standard is an independent source of news and commentary
fighting for a strong and free Western Canada,
committed to the truth even when it hurts,
and forever pledged to refuse government funding.
The Western Standard was founded in 2004 as an unofficial successor to the to the Alberta Report under the motto “The independent voice of the New West”. It quickly became one of the largest magazines in Canada with a by-weekly subscription of more than 40,000 individuals. In this time, the Western Standard led the fight against Canadian government censors and pushed the boundaries of the mainstream media.
The magazine ceased distribution in October of 2007, after which then Publisher, Ezra Levant sold it to Matthew Johnston. From 2007 until 2014, the Western Standard’s continued as a blog.
The Western Standard returned to publication as an online news and opinion platform in October of 2019 when it was bought by current Publisher, Derek Fildebrandt. Since returning, the Western Standard has ranked as the third-most read online news publication in Western Canada, and continues to operate under its original motto, “The independent voice of the New West”.
